While finishing their studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Marty and Richard were fantasizing about owning their own business, being their own boss, steering their own ship, etc., etc.To satisfy his creative side, Marty was working at a local florist while Richard majored in Ornamental Horticulture. A retail florist fit all the requirements. Being young and naïve, and not really realizing how many hours a week a new business requires (and compound in that fact by the new business being a retail florist, where everything is custom made with perishable items, and still is to this day), The Flower Shop opened its doors October 1, 1980. Also, if we all remember correctly, the U.S. economy way not great… Sound eerily familiar? Despite the ship having to navigate rough waters caused by all of the above mentioned facts, THEY PROSPERED. Why? By demanding the most of themselves, the freshest of flowers from their wholesalers, and the widest variety of types of flowers to be offered in Gainesville. At the time, if you wanted a nice rose, carnation, glad, or mum, you had a few florists to choose from. BUT, if you wanted a protea, bird of paradise, heliconia, or an unusual color of rose (you mean they come in other colors besides red or white?), The Flower Shop was and is your port of call. Do you know how exhausting it is to demand the most of yourself for 22 years, 7 days a week and counting? VERY! But that is still The Flower Shop policy – the freshest flowers, most exciting designs for the occasion, always the best we can do. IT PAYS OFF. New customers as well as customers we’ve had for 22 years still call and tell us that the flowers they send or receive for daily business, their son’s/daughter’s weddings, their bar mitzvahs, even the sympathy arrangements that they send/receive are THE BEST, THE FRESHEST, THE PRETTIEST. That continues to give new gusts of wind to our sails, we can’t throw out the anchor, we have your orders to take care of – whether delivering here in Gainesville and surrounding areas, or in other states, even other parts of the world.
