What Flowers to Give After Surgery: Hospital Rules and Best Choices (2026)

Last updated: September 26, 2026

Quick answer: After surgery, send a small, low-scent arrangement in a vase, such as roses, carnations, tulips or an orchid. Check the unit first. The CDC advises against fresh or dried flowers and potted plants in patient areas for people with weakened immune systems, and hospitals such as Memorial Sloan Kettering, NYU Langone and Mass General Brigham restrict flowers in intensive care and oncology units. If the patient is in one of those units, send the flowers to their home for when they get back, or send a mylar balloon instead.

Fast facts

  • Most general surgical and recovery rooms accept flowers. Intensive care, oncology, transplant and burn units often do not.
  • Latex balloons are banned at many hospitals, including NYU Langone, Mass General Brigham, Stanford and UK HealthCare. Mylar balloons are usually allowed.
  • Address the delivery with the patient's full name and room number, and call the unit to confirm its flower policy.
  • If the patient goes home the same day or soon after, send the flowers to the home.
  • Same-day delivery to hospitals in all 50 states. Order by 1:00 PM in the recipient's time zone, Monday to Saturday.

What to send someone recovering from surgery, which hospital units do not allow flowers, and what to send instead. Hospital rules on this page are quoted from each hospital's own published policy, checked on September 26, 2026.

Can you send flowers to someone after surgery?

Usually yes. The CDC's infection control guidelines say "flowers and potted plants need not be restricted from areas for immunocompetent patients," which covers most general surgical and recovery rooms. The same guidelines say "do not allow fresh or dried flowers, or potted plants in patient-care areas for immunosuppressed patients." That is why intensive care, cancer, transplant and burn units are the usual exceptions.

Which hospital units do not allow flowers?

Rules vary by hospital and by unit. These are the published policies of seven US hospitals and health systems:

Hospital Flower rule Balloons
Memorial Sloan Kettering "Do not bring fresh cut, dried, or live flowers or plants into the ICU." Not stated
NYU Langone Health Flowers and live plants "permitted in select areas"; restricted in ICUs, oncology, transplant, post-operative units and more. Gifts are picked up in the lobby by a support person. One mylar balloon; no latex
Mass General Brigham "Certain patient areas, such as intensive care or medical oncology units, limit or prohibit flower delivery." Mylar yes, latex no
MD Anderson Cancer Center "Some patients may not be able to keep fresh flowers or live plants in their rooms due to the risk of infection." Check with the charge nurse. Suggests a balloon bouquet instead
UK HealthCare (Chandler Hospital) "In ICUs, flowers will be left at the nursing station." No latex
UCSF Health, Bothin Burn Center "Fresh flowers or live plants are not allowed in the unit." Artificial flowers and balloons allowed
Stanford Health Care Not stated on the visitor page "Only Mylar balloons"

If you do not know which unit the patient is in, call the hospital's main number and ask for the unit's flower policy before you order.

What flowers are best after surgery?

This is our florist guidance for a hospital room or a recovering patient at home:

  • Keep it small. Hospital bedside tables are crowded and rooms are often shared. A compact vase arrangement is easier than a large display.
  • Choose low scent. Roses, carnations, tulips, alstroemeria and orchids have little or no fragrance. Skip heavily scented flowers such as stargazer lilies, especially in a shared room.
  • Send it in a vase. The patient and nurses should not have to find a container or arrange stems.
  • Pick bright colors. Yellow, pink, orange and mixed colors read as cheerful. All-white arrangements can feel somber in a hospital.
  • Save plants for home. Potted plants carry soil, which the CDC lists alongside flowers for restricted areas. A plant is a good choice once the patient is home.

Should you send flowers to the hospital or to their home?

Send them home if the patient is having outpatient surgery, is going home within a day or two, or is in a unit that restricts flowers. Flowers delivered to a hospital after the patient is discharged are usually not forwarded. If the patient will stay several days in a general surgical room, hospital delivery is fine once you have the room number.

What can you send instead of flowers?

  • A mylar balloon. Most hospitals that ban latex allow mylar. NYU Langone allows one mylar balloon at the bedside.
  • A snack gift basket. MD Anderson suggests "a balloon bouquet or snack gift basket" when flowers are not allowed. Check any diet restrictions with the family first.
  • Flowers at home, later. Schedule delivery for the day after they get home.

How do you send flowers to someone in the hospital?

  1. Confirm the hospital name, the patient's full name and the room number.
  2. Call the unit to check its flower policy.
  3. Order before the same-day cutoff. With us that is 1:00 PM in the hospital's time zone, Monday to Saturday.
  4. Put the patient's full name and room number in the delivery details. UK HealthCare, for example, asks for "Patient first and last name, Room number."

Some hospitals do not take flowers to the room. UK HealthCare delivers flowers by volunteers Monday through Friday, and NYU Langone asks a support person to collect gifts in the lobby. See our hospital flower delivery guide for more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flowers should you give after surgery?

A small, low-scent arrangement in a vase: roses, carnations, tulips, alstroemeria or an orchid, in bright colors. Avoid strongly scented lilies and large displays, and save potted plants for when the patient is home.

Can you send flowers to someone in the ICU after surgery?

Usually not. Memorial Sloan Kettering does not allow flowers or plants in its ICU, and UK HealthCare leaves ICU flowers at the nursing station. Send them to the patient's home instead, or wait until they move to a regular room.

Are balloons allowed in hospitals?

Mylar balloons usually are. Latex balloons are banned at many hospitals, including NYU Langone, Mass General Brigham, Stanford and UK HealthCare.

Should I send flowers to the hospital or their home after surgery?

Send them home for outpatient surgery, a short stay, or a unit that restricts flowers. Send them to the hospital only for a stay of several days in a general room, with the room number.

Why are flowers not allowed in some hospital units?

Flowers, vase water and potting soil can carry germs that are a risk to patients with weakened immune systems. The CDC advises against fresh or dried flowers and potted plants in patient areas for immunosuppressed patients.
